Design and construction of a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) faculty. The building will comprise both formal and practical learning areas and laboratories, administration facilities and services. Due to the location of the site adjacent to the River Tees it is anticipated that the sub-structure work will be extensive.

Middlesbrough College wish to create a new three-storey, landmark building, which will accommodate a variety of spaces to suit the many different activities that will take place within it and provide a high quality addition to the Middlehaven Campus.
The main feature of the design is the provision of three large-scale workshops, which will accommodate the Manufacturing, Process and Logistic elements of the brief. The noisier, vocational teaching provision that will take place within the large scale workshops will be complimented by a three storey block which will accommodate the quieter cellular teaching spaces, staff workrooms, social areas, toilets and other service facilities. The development will provide:
— A high quality, landmark building that will complement and enhance the existing main buildings and wider campus environment;
— A State of the art teaching and learning environment that will reflect the needs and standards of local industry;
— A flexible environment that can adapt to changing needs of the College and local employers;
— A design that allows for future extension should demand continue to grow.
— A highly sustainable environment that reflects the College’s own ambitions to reduce energy use and C02 emissions and provides a potential teaching resource for learners. At this time a target of BREEAM Excellent has been identified.
— A gross internal floor area of approximately 4 210 m2.
The new centre is to be constructed by May 2015 to enabling Client fit out to be completed prior to opening in September 2015.
The building is to be constructed in an area of reclaimed land and it is anticipated that extensive ground works and piling will be required prior to commencing on the superstructure.
