The ESRC will manage the production of copy to agreed word counts and timetable, the editing and the free distribution. Britain in is a magazine for a wide audience, showcasing social sciences around the theme of the state of the nation. Following a formal review in 2008 of ESRC’s corporate magazines and approval from the ESRC Communications and Information Committee Britain in became the ESRC’s annual newsstand publication. Published in early November it is designed to appeal to those who enjoy informed debate, current affairs and have an interest in social sciences and UK society. ESRC’s annual magazine was first published in June 2007; the 2008 issue was moved to its now regular slot in November. The fourth issue, Britain in 2010, was published on the 19 November 2009 at a retail price of £4-95. 50,000 copies were printed of the 2010 issue, of which ESRC distributed around 16,000 copies free to its contacts. In 2010, cover price was increased to £5-50 and 40,000 copies of Britain in 2011 to Britain in 2013 were printed and distributed to the UK newsstand. The retail distribution is managed by the publisher. Sales figures have dropped slightly year on year, but the decrease is proportionately less than other current affairs titles.
