Description of the contract
1. The ESRC e Social Science Programme was set up to develop and promote the use of e Science to benefit social science research. In 2004, the Programme funded the ESRC National Centre for e-Social Science (NCeSS). This was a distributed Centre with a ‘hub’ at the University of Manchester and a network of eight research ‘nodes’ spread across the UK. Following an ESRC review of the NCeSS in 2009, it was decided to replace the hub with a National Strategic Directorate to develop a co-ordinated e-social science strategy. At this stage, the programme’s name was changed from e-Social Science to Digital Social Research (DSR). This evaluation will assess the quality, achievements and impact of the Digital Social Research Programme, which consisted of: • the National Strategic Director for e-Social Science; • the strategic investments funded as part of the Digital Social Research Programme between 2010-2012; • and the eight ‘node’ projects that were originally funded through NCeSS and continued as part of the DSR Programme. The evaluation will also assess the effectiveness of the DSR Directorate and Research Programme model as a means of organising and enhancing the work. Please refer to the attached documentation for the full specification.
