The National Army Museum (NAM) is in the process of redeveloping its facilities at Chelsea, London, to create a facility fit for the future. The scheme involves the creation a major new central atrium in the heart of the existing building, around which a temporary gallery and multiple permanent galleries will be arranged over a number of floors. Additionally, the project will include the creation of new visitor arrival and orientation areas, including external landscaping and commercial areas, archive and research facilities and a learning suite. The project also includes the interpretative design and fit out of the permanent gallery spaces and other areas.
The NAM is currently seeking to appoint an Exhibition Designer to progress the project from detailed design through to completion. The design of the interpretation has been progressed through to the end of scheme design (RIBA Stage D). For the GBP 5 million exhibition fit out at NAM, the appointed Exhibition Designer will be required to develop detailed designs; prepare tender documents; be the keeper of design intent once the contractor(s) is/are on site; and, oversee snagging during the defects liability period. The Designer will work closely with the Project Manager, Architect and Contractor(s) (all appointed separately) to ensure value for money.
In their presentation to the NAM Project Board, the Designer will be required to show advancement of the detail of existing scheme designs, which provide high-quality interpretation that is sensitive to both aspirations for greater access to the Collection and conservation standards and which address the sustainability requirements of the entire project. The Designer will be required to ensure that all statutory, local authority and any other such regulations are complied with.
Following the decision by the Heritage Lottery Fund on the NAM’s Round Two Application, the Exhibition Designer will be appointed to assist in the delivery of the project from detailed design (RIBA Stage E) through post-practical completion (RIBA Stage L). The appointment will only be made should NAM be successful in its HLF application. The project will be delivered between April 2014 and July 2016. Detailed design period is anticipated to be April 2014 to November 2014. The Exhibition fit out is anticipated to go out to tender in February 2015. Offsite fabrication is anticipated to take place between June 2015 and September 2015, with the Exhibition Fit Out completing by March 2016.
