Anglesey County Council has embarked upon a programme to transform its provision of services to older people, with a priority being the way in which the combination of accommodation and care is best provided. It has recognised that not only is there good evidence from across the UK and elsewhere that models such as Extra Care provide better health and care outcomes for its residents than traditional residential care, but it (Extra Care) is also an option preferred by older people themselves.
To that end the Council’s Executive Committee has agreed to the development of Extra Care and this is a clear and agreed Corporate objective.
In Amlwch (and the surrounding Alaw area) the underlying demographic data tell us that over the next 20 years the ‘over 65s’ population is predicted to increase by 39 % whilst the ‘over 75s’ will increase by 84 %. When a suggested ratio of provision of Extra Care (based on the wider Wales and UK experience to-date) is placed against these increases in population there is clear evidence of need for Extra Care in Amlwch. A copy of the local needs assessment are is available.
