II.1.5)Short description of the contract or purchase(s)

Research is required to examine the following samples for the presence of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) and/or bone marrow. I. Ruminant DSM samples produced from bovine vertebral column and long bones containing bone marrow. These should be compared with – mince prepared, if possible, from cuts of meat from the same type of bone and residual ruminant meat that has been removed from bones by a knife or hand held powered equipment with a cutting or shearing action. II. DSM should be compared with MSM (meat that is separated from the bones by mechanical means under high pressure) prepared ruminant vertebral column and long bones. In the event that is not possible to obtain material from ruminant bones then equivalent porcine bones will have to be used. Ideally the bones before and after preparation of these samples should also be analysed to determine if dorsal root ganglia or bone marrow has been removed. The above work is dependent on the availability of the relevant samples in sufficient quantity to give a statistically valid result. The FSA will assist the contractor in arranging for the required samples, but the proposal costs should include any costs associated with obtaining the samples. In common with all government departments The Agency has a restricted budget and overall cost and value for money will be key criteria in the selection process. The Agency is committed to openness and transparency. As well as the final project report being published on our open access repository Foodbase, we encourage contractors to publish their work in peer reviewed scientific publications wherever possible. Also, in line with the Government’s Transparency Agenda which aims to encourage more open access to data held by government, the Agency is developing a policy on the release of underpinning data from all of its science- and evidence-gathering research projects. Underpinning data should also be published in an open, accessible, and re-usable format, such that the data can be made available to future researchers and the maximum benefit is derived from it. The Agency has established the key principles for release of underpinning data that will be applied to all new science- and evidence-gathering projects which we would expect contractors to comply with. These can be found at http://www.food.gov.uk/about-us/data-and-policies/underpinning-data
