Proposals are invited for research that will significantly improve our understanding of the interactions between pathogens and fresh produce and lead to the identification of controls, which are relevant and acceptable to current production methods, for improving the microbiological safety of ready to eat fruit and vegetables. It is proposed that these aims will be addressed by a programme of research that may encompass the areas described below, though other approaches to deliver the desired outcome may be proposed if justified. Applicants must demonstrate that they have the necessary knowledge/expertise/skills in the proposed research team to deliver high quality of research across the range of work proposed – this may require a consortium approach. 1. FS101052 – The survivability of pathogens on soiled root vegetables from harvest to retail. 2. FS101056 – The extent and significance of internalisation of pathogens in salad plants. 3. FS101069 – Factors affecting the attachment of bacteria to plant tissue and mechanisms for detachment. 4. FS101060 – Use of treatments to prevent the growth of pathogens on sprouted seeds.
