Leicester City Council’s Voluntary and Community Sector Preventative review identified the need for a low level support service to reach out to older people who may be socially isolated but not yet eligible for statutory Adult Social Care services. The service supports the prevention agenda by supporting older people to maintain their independence in the community. This will be achieved through an initial assessment, followed by short term, low level interventions and the provision of a befriending service supported by volunteers. The service aims to reduce the risk of social isolation and help maintain and promote social interactions and natural support networks. The RequirementTo establish a high quality, person-centred, culturally appropriate good neighbour and befriending scheme to promote health, well-being and independence amongst frail elderly people who are not eligible for Adult Social Care support at the present time. The purpose of the service is to prevent or delay the need for higher intensity health or care services and to reduce isolation.
