Description

•This project involves the construction of Phase 2 of the great northern greenway, predominantly following the alignment of a section of the now disused Great Northern Railway, and continuing from the previously constructed Great Northern Greenway Phase 1. The proposals are as follows;

Clear vegetation in accordance with advice detailed within the ecological report and arboricultural statement commissioned for the project. This will create the corridor through which the route can pass, but also looks to improve the ecological and arboricultural conditions where possible. Vegetation removal works have also been designed in accordance with the Derbyshire Landscape Character Assessment, to ensure the character of this area is not impacted by the scheme.

Where the route is proposed away from the existing trackbed, a shallow (150mm – 200mm) surface excavation will take place. On the trackbed sections of the route the existing track ballast will be scarified to a depth of 50mm with the exception of the area to the east on the trackbed, where the ballast has become buried beneath layers of silt, and deeper excavation may be required to reach competent ground.

There are a number of existing drainage ditches in the area which will be cleared out as part of this scheme. The exception to this is at the eastern end of the SSSI (near to the tunnel entrance), where the historically poor drainage has contributed to the development of the SSSI. In this area care will be taken to ensure the exiting conditions remain unchanged whilst the newly constructed greenway route is not compromised.

•The ecological report (Frith 2012) recommends a grassland area within area ‘K’ be re-created, due to its importance to the SSSI designation. (Position shown on drawing number 9138a – 005). This will take place in accordance with guidance contained within the ecological report.
•Where the 150mm – 200mm excavation has taken place, a sub-base layer will be installed, again to a depth of 150mm- 200mm. The material will be DfT type 1. The sub-base/ballast will be surfaced with a 75mm deep layer of recycled surfacing aggregate similar to Tarmac Toptrec or similar approved. The final surface will be set to a 1:40 crossfall to aid the free drainage of the route. Subject to securing planning approval for this scheme, the contractor undertaking the works will be asked to source all materials from local quarries or aggregate suppliers, and where practicable the material will be inert, recycled aggregate. In a number of areas trees and low lying vegetation have been identified for protection. Where this is the case protection will be installed or constructed in accordance with with the ecological and arboricultural statements.

•Following the construction phase of the project, a landscaping scheme is proposed in part to mitigate for the vegetation lost as a result of the construction and to re-affirm existing boundaries. These works, along with the vegetation removal works will take place in accordance with best practice guidance and under the supervision of an appropriately qualified Arboriculturalist.

Following completion of the works, a programme of ongoing management of the facility will take place to ensure the SSSI is managed appropriately, and that new planting is given the opportunity to thrive. Ongoing management will take place in accordance with the ‘SSSI Management Plan’ (Frith, revised 2012) and the attached arboricultural statement.
