- The Government’s health and social care reforms are centred on the fundamental principle that patients and the public must be at the heart of everything our health and social care services do.
As part of this the Health and Social Care Act 2012 establishes Healthwatch England at the national level and requires local authorities to establish Local Healthwatch (LHw) in their areas.
Northumberland County Council is now commissioning for an organisation to deliver Local Healthwatch in Northumberland – Healthwatch Northumberland. This title could be subject to further consultation to ensure the name reflects the true nature and purpose of the organisation. This will be a three year rolling contract which will be reviewed annually. Funding for the first year is £314,000, funding for subsequent years will be dependent on the Governments spending review 2014/17.
Healthwatch Northumberland will be a new independent consumer champion for patients, carers and all those using health and social care services, as well as the wider public, ensuring that the views and feedback from patients and carers are an integral part of local commissioning across health and social care. LHw is seen as an evolution from the existing work done by LINks.
Ultimately the overall goal for Healthwatch Northumberland is to improve Health and Wellbeing in Northumberland and as a member of Northumberland Health and Wellbeing Boards will contribute to its purpose:
“To improve the health and wellbeing of the population of Northumberland, by transforming the way services are commissioned and provided, and through integrated action on the wider factors that lead to health inequality”
