Description of the goods or services requiredIn 2016, SMRU will require to carry out harbour seal surveys in Orkney, along the north coast of Scotland, in the Western Isles, and possibly along parts of the Moray Firth coast. Surveys will be carried out in August, during the harbour seals’ annual moult and will require approximately 33 hours flying time, including transits. There will be further survey requirements in future years, but the extent of these will be dependent on funding. Surveys are weather dependent; we cannot survey in moderate or heavy rain as seals depart into the sea. SMRU have developed a technique for surveying harbour (common) seals inhabiting rocky coastlines using a thermal imaging camera in a helicopter. The survey equipment that will be used on/in the aircraft is described in the full tender specification.
