The University of Sheffield’s Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) is out to tender for a high power Diode Laser Cladding Facility (DLC) facility capable of depositing at high speed, defect free, low dilution, thin single layers of stainless steel and NI based alloys. The facility should be able to clad horizontal surfaces (ASME IX 1G) and also surfaces that deviate from this orientation, including vertical walls (ASME IX 2G).
The DLC facility shall show that in comparison to conventional cladding techniques such as GTAW and GMAW, high power DLC is capable of producing:
a) equivalent or better quality;
b) higher coverage rates (< 10 hrs per square metre with 1 mm thickness);
c) higher or equal deposition rates (> 5 Kg/hr);
d) lower dilution (< 10 %)
e) thinner clad layers (< 3 mm);
f) less consumable usage as a result of d) and e);
g) as-clad surface finish which requires minimal finishing operations.
The DLC facility shall comprise a “Turnkey” solution that will encompass, but not be limited to, the following:
High power diode laser beam facility.
Powder feeder and nozzles.
Manipulators.
Safety enclosure including all required safety features (for example fume extraction, argon gas detection, and laser safety).
CNC software control.
Integration of the different components.
It is expected that a single supplier will not have a complete expertise to deliver the entire project and that a consortium of specialised suppliers will be formed. One Supplier, ideally the “systems integrator” will take over the lead function and responsibility for design, delivery, coordination, and commissioning, and will report to the Purchaser.
The facility must be able to clad the inner surface of candidate parts (but reduced in size) of pressure vessels, namely dished ends and shell strakes. Details are described in ANNEX D. In short, the dished end is a torispherical head and the shell strake is 1 m long cylinder. Both are 3 m in diameter and have a weight of approximately 3 tons. However, the DLC facility must be future proof for being upgradable for larger components, for example to be able to clad the inner surface of cylinders 6 m long with a 4 m diameter. The Supplier must indicate how this upgrade can be achieved and, if already available, give a quote as an option.
