NHSBT wishes to commence a tender process in early 2021 for a replacement contract for primary collection and ancillary blood packs.
Primary collection systems are for the collection of whole blood in two configurations (‘bottom and top’ and ‘top and top’). Ancillary systems are for secondary manufacturing processes and subsequent storage, such as for pooled platelet concentrates or small volume neonatal components.
The tender will be for NHSBT in collaboration with other Blood Services, potentially including those in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.
In the first instance the NHSBT specification used for the last tender exercise, derived from ‘Eurobloodpack 2’ specification, will be utilised.
It is anticipated that in line with EU legislation this specification will change to reflect removal of DEHP plasticiser from all systems during the lifetime of the future agreement. The strategy for handling such anticipated change to the specification is under development.
