The existing SOAS telephone system (BOSCH Private Business Exchange or PBX) is reaching end of life. Some aspects of the system are out of support by the original manufacturer and certain components are no longer in production. The system has a complex maintenance arrangement with three parties supporting elements. The technology is also older, though some VOIP connections have been added recently. SOAS wishes to renew this technology and implement an improved VOIP/Unified Communications system.
Additionally, the system is built around the concept of a phone on an office desk with staff (academics and professional services) working onsite and not remotely. There is now strong demand to access services from a hot-desk or offsite (home, conferences and abroad). SOAS is interested in procuring a system that supports enhanced flexible working.
SOAS is interested in new technologies such as VoIP and Unified Communications (UC) that can deliver improved reliability and functionality while being scalable to allow for future growth and to allow better accommodation of key business cycles.
The objectives of that project are:
1. To simplify the support arrangements.
2. To provide a resilient, scalable and flexible telecommunications solution that will be supported and relevant for the requirements of the School until 2020 at least.
3. To allow a flexible working environment both on and offsite to maximize the efficient use of space whilst maintaining and enhancing staff productivity.
4. To boost the responsiveness of staff to responding to communications.
5. To reduce the overall cost of telephony.
6. To become a part of a unified communications platform that better integrates Instant Messaging, Voice, Video, Email and other systems.
7. To encourage more desk based meetings to free up valuable meeting/conference space and reduce the cost of travel.
