Birmingham New Street station is one of the biggest and busiest rail stations in the UK, and the hub of the local and national rail networks. It is a sub surface station and was the first in the UK to include the development of its air rights, (building above an operated station).
The project is backed by Birmingham City Council, Department for Transport, Network Rail and Centro and will be delivered by Network Rail alongside its delivery partner.
Phase 1 saw the first half of the new station concourse constructed offline next door to the existing station, which opened to passengers on 28.4.2013 when work switched to developing the existing station
Grand Central and John Lewis will open in Autumn 2014, with the project completing in 2015.
Anchored by a full line John Lewis Store and opening Autumn 2014, Grand Central Birmingham will bring over 40 new premium and high quality fashion stores and more than 20 new concept cafes and restaurants to the city. Grand Central will sit directly above the world class New Street Station at the heart of the City’s retail offer.
