The General Medical Council (GMC) is the independent regulator for doctors in the UK. Our role is to protect patients and improve medical education and practice across the UK. We are introducing a national Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) to demonstrate that those who obtain registration with a licence to practice medicine from us can meet a common threshold for safe practice of medicine in the UK. There will be a staged implementation with the MLA fully established by 2023.
