Since 2014, Medway has commissioned an integrated adult substance misuse treatment service, offering access to a range of interventions to support people living with drug and alcohol misuse problems. The rate of people successfully completing treatment, has improved by 30 % against a backdrop of a 12 % reduction in overall numbers of people in treatment between 2014/15 and 2016/17. However there are still high numbers of service users who re-present to services within 6 months — Medway Council wants to continue to invest in developing resources that contribute to sustained recovery in people following treatment. The Council wants to reduce the impact of problematic substance misuse on families and communities. Key to this is reducing the number of people who relapse and need to return to treatment following successful completion of a programme.
Medway Council is developing an effective recovery system for the area that includes the commissioning of two distinct services. These services will enable substance misusers to engage in and complete effective treatment and be supported into sustainable recovery. The treatment system will include an Engagement, Assessment, Stabilisation and Treatment Service alongside a Wellbeing and Recovery Service.
Medway Council will focus resources on those adults whose substance misuse has the greatest impact on their own lives and the lives of others (in particular their families and communities) and those most likely to change their behaviours.
