As part of the information services modernisation programme, the next generation networks (NGN) project will deliver significant improvements to the capacity and quality of ECC’s corporate computer network, secure seamless connectivity to the networks of partner organisations in the public sector and faster connections to the internet. As ECC embraces mobile and flexible working more fully, staff will be able to move around between sites and use unified communications tools, such as instant messaging and video conferencing to keep in touch with colleagues and customers. Fixed to mobile telephony conversion will allow us to route incoming telephone calls to desk phones or mobiles without the caller being aware of this, and provide the option to significantly reduce the number of fixed-line handsets on the estate. As part of the NGN project, the council’s telephone systems will be converted to utilise IP telephony, which routes calls via the data network, removing the need for separate voice networks.
Such services will be provided to ECC, ECC’s associated and/or partner organisations (including but not limited to Essex Cares Ltd, Essex Probation Service, Essex Pensions [Fund], Library Services (Slough) Ltd) and potentially to other local authorities, fire authorities, police authorities, other organisations and/or bodies who may be providing related and/or ancillary services, delivering shared services and/or aims and/or objectives of ECC or such bodies. The services should therefore be scalable and adaptable to such changes. Further details of the relevant bodies will be given in the Official Journal of the European Union notice.
