The aim of the introduction of Level 2 Oral Surgery Service is to:
— reduce referrals into secondary care;
— ensure patients are treated within 18 weeks;
— prevent inappropriate referrals from GDPs;
— identify training and education needs of GDPs;
— increase the access of oral surgery services across the whole of the county;
— ensure that patients are treatment in the most appropriate setting;
— to enhance preventative and quality services to patients.
Details of eligible patients (referred by local dentists) will be allocated between level 2 oral surgery providers via clinical triage system to ensure that only appropriate cases are treated through this service and that the referral pathway can be audited.
The service is restricted to patients resident in Essex and/or registered with a GP in Essex aged 12 and over but including the occasional orthodontic extraction case of appropriate complexity if this is supported by a specialist or consultant orthodontist for treatment before the age of 12 as part of an orthodontic treatment plan.
Level 2 providers will work constructively and collaboratively to provide the treatment element of the Level 2 service and help to promote good practice amongst referring GDPs.
