The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR) is proposed as both a bypass and a distributor road around the City of Aberdeen. The route is the construction of a wholly new dual two lane road some 34,6 km long around Aberdeen City, together with a fast link to Stonehaven some 11,5 km long, associated side roads and connections.
The AWPR will provide access to the Park & Choose and rail freight transfer sites around the periphery of the City and improve access to National and European Transport Networks, reducing the peripherality of the area. It will remove traffic from unsuitable roads in and around Aberdeen. It is required to facilitate the implementation of other projects within the area and allow the most effective use of roadspace throughout the City.
The A90 Balmedie to Tipperty Scheme comprises a 9 km section of new dual carriageway, with two lanes in each direction, three grade separated junctions to allow access on and off the new road at the following locations: to the south of Balmedie; at Rashierieve; and south of Tipperty. The scheme also includes for the upgrading of 3 km of existing dual carriageway immediately to the south of Balmedie.
A programme of non-invasive archaeological investigations is required to identify and record the extent of known archaeological remains and historic buildings on which these schemes will have an impact and to identify previously unknown archaeological remains. The results of non-invasive archaeological investigations will be used to determine the need for, nature, scope and scale of the invasive archaeological investigations that may be required. The invasive archaeological investigations will be a separate commission.
The contract may also include some or all of the following:
Access from the North Proposal (Third Don Crossing): Subject to confirmation, archaeological non-invasive investigations may be required on this 2,4 km single carriageway road and river crossing scheme in Aberdeen.
Subject to confirmation, undertaking archaeological non-invasive investigations of the 999 space A96 Dyce Park and Choose site and a 0,5 km link road.
Subject to confirmation, undertaking archaeological non-invasive investigations of the 999 space A90 Aberdeen South Park and Choose (Schoolhill).
