Description
Nottingham is the most energy self-sufficient city in the UK and is one of the few Cities to have developed a citywide energy strategy based on green energy production. Nottingham’s Energy Strategy provides an overarching framework for the City’s plans, programmes and initiatives relating to sustainable energy supply and use to 2020: cutting emissions, maintaining energy security, maximising economic opportunities, and protecting the most vulnerable. The strategy has the key targets of:
– Delivering a 26% reduction of carbon dioxide emissions against 2005 levels; and
– Ensuring 20% of the City’s own energy is generated from low or zero carbon sources by the target date of 2020, as set out in the local sustainable community strategy.
Nottingham’s manifesto builds on this and aims to encourage more alternative fuel supplies and support more energy-saving schemes in housing with manifesto commitments to:
– Help residents keep their energy bills downs by doubling the number of homes with loft, cavity and solid wall insulation;
– Expand Nottingham’s District Heating Scheme so more residents can choose to use it as the price of gas and electricity continues to rise;
– Create a new, cheap Nottingham energy tariff;
– Cut carbon emissions by 31% as an authority and by 26% across the city by 2020.
