Description of the contract

The STA employs a matrix-sampling model with around 9,500 pupils from 1,900 schools to assess national performance in science at key stage 2. At present there are 15 pen-and-paper instruments used to assess the key stage 2 science curriculum. In the future, following the introduction of the new primary curriculum, the intention is to introduce a number of performance assessment instruments to assess the practical elements of the science curriculum. At present, the STA has not determined the most appropriate models of assessment in terms of structure, administration, marking/scoring, length etc. for these performance assessments. The STA is therefore procuring a supplier to support the development of an assessment framework to enable the future procurement of performance assessment instruments. This contract will include the development of exemplar tasks for informal trialling to inform the decision making process. However, the development of full instruments for inclusion in the matrix sampling model is outside the scope of this contract. A further procurement will be undertaken for this future development work.
