The Council is nearing the end of the phased introduction of kerbside collection of cans and plastics to approximately 160,000 households. This process will be completed by autumn 2014. By October 2013, approximately 120,000 households will be provided with the service.
Council records indicate on average, 0.8 kg per week of co-mingled post consumer plastics and cans is collected from each household to which the service is offered. Consequently, it is anticipated that when fully implemented, the service will yield circa 6,600 tonnes per year. This does not include plastics and cans that may be collected by the Council’s commercial waste collection service. The potential weight of plastics and cans from this source is not yet known. However, the contractor may be required to accept material recovered from this source.
