For almost 50 years British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has operated a research facility on the Brunt Ice Shelf, Antarctica.
Halley Research Station is the UKs most isolated facility and is afloat on an ice shelf off the mainland of Antarctica.
There have been five Halley bases built so far. The first four were all buried by snow accumulation and crushed until they were uninhabitable. Various construction methods were tried, from unprotected wooden huts to steel tunnels. Halley V has the main buildings built on steel platforms that are raised annually to keep them above the snow surface.
A new station, Halley VI, is in the final stages of completion. It consists of eight individual modules, connected together to form a long, train-like structure. The stations aerodynamic modules and long, thin shape help minimize the accumulation of snow around the buildings.
Like its predecessors Halley VI will operate throughout the year with a maximum population of 70 in the summer and an average of 16 over the winter.
To accommodate the extra personnel during the austral summer there is a need to provide additional accommodation and workshop facilities.
BAS is looking for a supplier to fabricate 16 pod units to 20 foot ISO size or adapt Hi-Cube shipping containers into two separate buildings of eight containers each.
The requirement includes:
Connection points to receive flexible pedestrian links between the buildings.
