Description of the contract

A remote synthesis rig capable of performing small scale synthesis experiments (e.g. producing up to 10g of product). To accommodate different scales of reaction a variety of interchangeable glassware should be provided. The apparatus should fit inside a typical fume cupboard. To assist with determining suitability, dimensions should be supplied. The apparatus should be able to maintain temperature programmes by controlled heating/cooling and record the temperature profile of the ongoing reaction. Reactions should be continually mixed using reliable stirrers; the ability to use either magnetic or overhead stirrers is essential. Addition of solid materials would be a definite advantage, however controlled remote additions of starting materials (solid or liquid) is essential. Once a reaction is complete it would be advantageous to flush the reaction vessel into a filtration vessel to reduce operator contact with the reaction mixture as much as possible. Also of interest but not essential is a storage system in which the equipment can be stored/transported as it is anticipated the equipment will be moved between laboratories. Inclusion of a robust storage system that will minimise damage is an advantage although not essential. For future developments it would be advantageous that the system is compatible with a range of equipment that can be upgraded or interchanged. Inclusion of software and apparatus handling training will be considered. Ex demonstration equipment will be considered.
