In order to protect children from the harmful effects of second hand smoke (SHS) in cars, the Welsh Government has launched the three—year Fresh Start Wales campaign. The campaign calls on parents and other carers to pledge to keep their cars smoke free, and thereby protect their children from the health risks associated with SHS in a confined space.
The Welsh Government will consider pursuing a ban on smoking in cars carrying children if children’s exposure to SHS in cars does not start to fall within the next three years. To help inform this decision, the Welsh Government wishes to commission a research project that will assess the impact that the Fresh Start Wales campaign has on children’s exposure and attitudes to smoking in cars.
The Contractor will undertake a cross—sectional study of Year 6 school children in Wales, from a nationally representative sample of state maintained primary schools, during the Summer term of 2013. The Welsh Government may also choose to repeat the study in 2014. Data will be collected in the classroom environment, where school children will be asked to complete a questionnaire. In addition to be completing the questionnaire, saliva samples will be taken for cotinine assay.
