The community of Rhiwbina in north Cardiff has been subject to pluvial flooding to properties on several occasions over the last twenty years (most recently in June 2009) from the watercourses that flow through the urban area from north to south. In order to provide an acceptable level of flood protection to 216 properties in the community Cardiff Council intends to construct new civil engineering works to manage the watercourses and the associated flood risk.

The works will likely comprise the construction of approximately 100 metres of reinforced concrete or earthern flood protection walls and banks within the urban watercourses in close proximity to the residential properties through which the water courses flow. Additionally, new remote water level monitoring equipment and trash screens will be installed. The works will also include the reforming and remodelling of the existing stream banks and the construction of large attenuation facilities in the urban area to manage peak water flows and volumes thus reducing the flood risk to acceptable levels.
