Est. Start Date: 21/05/2013
Est. End Date: 14/06/2013

Description

Leicester City Council’s New Walk Museum intends to digitise documents and book archives related to the German Expressionist Art Collection. This will enable them to provide access to important and interesting documents and archives in a variety of means – in gallery and online – and to better preserve the items by negating the need to handle them.

PROJECT SCOPE
The Council intends to commission an initial digitisation of accessioned and non-accessioned unique books and archives, starting with the initial scope of items relating to the German Expressionist Art Collection held at the New Walk Museum. It is expected there are approximately 10,000 documents plus 6 books required to be digitised. This equates to approximately 11,500 unique images in total to be digitised to the same standard as found at the British Library.

The images are to be used with Page Turning Software as to be found at the British Library. The preferred technology to scan to current good practice would be with the use of book2net scanning technology with a glass plate and minimum 40MP sensor size.

The sensor size and book handling technology should be of a high enough standard to work with fragile, historic media to provide the best quality of image whilst providing the best protection for the original media – the scanner must be able to cradle a book at varying angles to take account of the fragile nature of some of the works
The Council will provide an encrypted hard drive for the images to be put onto.

The entire works will be required to be picked up from New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester, digitised and returned within a four week period and the company must be able to start work as soon as possible after the contract is awarded.

Please note that all image rights are held exclusively by the Council
