West Yorkshire Police, on behalf of all UK Police Forces, are tendering for the Supply and Delivery of Public Support Unit Fire Extinguishers. The framework will be available for use by all UK Police Forces.
Fire extinguishers have been used in public order policing to provide a mechanism for extinguishing flames on officers when they have been subject to attack from petrol bombs. Most forces currently use halon in portable extinguishers, which are generally refilled on site within the Force area.
Halon is a particularly efficient extinguishant and its performance typically excels any other product. However, the use of halon is heavily restricted under European Legislation due to its ozone depletion properties. Whilst halon use is permitted for the protection of persons by military and police personnel, these permissions are frequently reviewed and are limited; the end date for police use of halon is currently 31.12.2013. A suitable alternative extinguisher is therefore required.
