The inorganic semiconductor physics group at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Sheffield, are looking to buy a vector-magnet system for low temperature optical magneto-microscopy and spectroscopy.
The system will be used for optical studies of solid state nano-structured materials and photonic structures comprising these materials. Examples include semiconductor quantum dots, nanowires, colour centres in diamond, colloidal quantum dots and various photonic cavities with these types of nanostructures. Physics to be studied span spin properties, photon statistics, coherence properties etc. These will be studied at low temperature (2-4K) and high magnetic field up to 9T. Importantly, not only the magnitude, but also direction of the magnetic field should be possible to vary in situ without removing the sample and changing optical alignment. In-plane magnetic fields up to 4T and above will be required. Requirement to address individual nano-structures and photonic cavities of various geometries will demand flexibility in precise sample positioning and optical excitation alignment also in situ, and in addition exceptional mechanical stability of the whole system.
