Description of the contract
Sputtering System – The Authority has a requirement for an entry-level, dual-target DC magnetron sputtering system capable of producing multilayer thin-film coatings of two different materials in sequence. The system will be used to coat the surfaces of solid-state radiation detectors; to produce diamond-like anti-corrosion coatings; and to fabricate multilayer mirrors for X-rays and/or neutrons, and must meet the following requirements: • It must be capable of depositing nickel, titanium, tungsten and carbon (the ability to deposit boron or silicon would be an advantage). • It must have the capability to accurately, and reproducibly, control the deposition of thin-film coatings of variable thickness, in an automated manner. • It must be capable of depositing at least five, but not more than one hundred, sequential layers in an automated manner without breaking the system vacuum. • It must accept flat samples (i.e. silicon wafers or detector chips) of up to 1 cm in thickness and 10 cm in diameter. • It must have an identifiable academic user base within the UK from which the Nuclear Department can seek advice and support. Companies must confirm that they have supplied the same, or similar, systems for coating tungsten, nickel and/or titanium to at least 5 academic institutions within the UK and that at least one customer worldwide has used one of their systems for the production of multi-layered thin films. • The Authority requires the Sputtering System to be delivered to HMS Sultan, installed, and commissioned by the end of June 2012. Companies that wish to express an interest in this requirement are required to provide their full company name, postal address, contact name, telephone number and email address to uhobbs.hq@defenceacademy.mod.uk. Companies must also confirm that they hold, or are working toward third party accreditation to ISO9001 and provide a copy of the same, which must also include the scope of accreditation and must also include coverage of the capability which is the subject of this advert.
