Description of the contract

Progress Housing Group (PHG) is seeking an organisation to provide a replacement Storage Area Network solution

Enterprise SAN solution, the SAN should be supplied with:

-30 Tb of usable space, once disks have been set into RAID groups, maximised for performance across the three tiers of performance using SSD, SAS and Nearline disks.

-Snapshot functionality to provide a protected restore function that is ideally not contained in the primary file system.

-Thin provisioning of volumes to allow physical allocation of just the storage that is needed together within a Virtual File System or LUN.

-Fully Automatic optimization of data placement across at least 3 tiers of data storage based on automated policy of data usage, to enable best level of performance.

-Capable of running a minimum of 500 Virtual Desktops, supporting the IOPS needed for boot up and running load, in addition to current Virtual machine load as described.

-Native Support for Fibre Channel, FCoE and iSCSI

-Support for all current Windows Server platforms 2003/2008/2012 and Hyper-v, VMware and Citrix Xenserver (All versions)

-Maintain the same performance and service levels in the event of a failure and must be designed to deliver five 9s in its availability (99.999% uptime)

-Active management notification using SNMP, email and full phone home functionality for event notifications.

The three tiers of storage should contain the following approximate capacities.

RAID 6 SSD 1.6 Tb Useable

RAID 6 SAS 10 Tb Useable

RAID 6 Nearline 24 Tb Useable


The solution proposed must integrate with our existing VMware environment and must come complete with a suite of software that enables the IT department to have a straight forward management interface that will assist us in the day to day tasks. Your solution will have active system management with role based permissions and a single interface for administration. The automated switching of tiered storage should be simple to manage and disk configurations should be flexible and optimized for performance.

The SAN must have full “dial home” functionality together with forward warning of any suspected failures in the hardware. All Support must be provided on a 24 x 7 on site basis to the Head Office, the DR site will be in office hours. Your Storage solution should be supplied with hot standby drives to cover failures on all disk configurations within the storage array at have automatic initiation of the rebuild of a failed drive, this must be able to be monitored through the management interface.
