Tax Return Deadline 31 January 2020
The self assessment tax return deadline for the year 2018-2019 is Friday, 31 January 2020. According to HMRC, there are still 3 million people who have not submitted their tax returns.
The government website .gov.uk has a comprehensive store of information available to users which is freely accessible at https://www.gov.uk/topic/personal-tax/self-assessment. There is also a self assessment helpline which can be contacted by ringing 0300 200 3310.
Jesse Norman, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury has said, “Anyone who believes they might not be able to file on time should make sure to call or email HMRC.”
The penalties for late tax returns are as follows:
- an initial £100 fixed penalty, which applies even if there is no tax to pay, or if the tax due is paid on time
- after 3 months, additional daily penalties of £10 per day may be charged, up to a maximum of £900
- after 6 months, a further penalty of 5% of the tax due or £300, whichever is greater
- after 12 months, another 5% or £300 charge, whichever is greater
There are also additional penalties for paying late of 5% of the tax unpaid at 30 days, 6 months and 12 months.
On 30 and 31 January the phone helplines will close at 8 PM, though it will still be possible to contact advisors by webchat up until midnight on both days.
If users require assistance in completing their tax returns they may find it helpful to go to https://www.gov.uk/topic/personal-tax/self-assessment first of all.
