Lochhead landfill Site is the main disposal facility in west Fife and started accepting waste over 30 years ago on the site of a former clay quarry. This quarry was engineered to form a dilute and disperse site, which was completed in 1996. The adjacent land that extends immediately to the east as far as the A823, was purchased to enable further development of this site. The first two phases were developed in accordance with the conditions of the Waste Management Licence (WML/E/20087) and are undergoing restoration. Phase three was developed in accordance with the requirements of the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations 2000 (S! 2000 No. 73), as amended and the site operates under PPC Permit (PPC-E-20083)
The site is permitted by the regulatory authority, Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) for the deposition of non-hazardous wastes:
Household Waste
Commercial Waste
Industrial Waste
Special waste is not permitted at this site and neither are liquid nor sludge wastes. However, some “difficult to handle” wastes are accepted, e.g. international catering waste.
On current deposition rates, the site accepts approximately 250,000 tonnes of waste per annum from Environmental Services, other Council Services and third parties.
