The University has a requirement to renew its current SAN framework agreement to supply equipment, software, support and services to replace and develop the current SAN Infrastructure.
The objectives of the SAN Infrastructure Renewal tender are to select a vendor/vendors solution which will:
1. Provide affordable ongoing storage provision for the University and a framework for future expansion and possible consolidation of the heterogeneous disparate storage environment; and
2. Provision of a next generation data storage solution and infrastructure that is scalable, flexible and resilient with the ability to meet the data storage demands placed on it by the needs of the University over the next 5-7 years and beyond.
In summary, the main drivers for the project are, to increase the storage capacity, enhance performance, reduce maintenance and ongoing costs and decrease the time to backup. These should be achieved whilst maintaining the level of reliability and performance, with the capability of expansion and an upgrade path. In particular, the selected vendor/vendors need to address:
— End of service life of the existing two HP EVA8100s.
— Space, both physical space and disk space.
— Management, including storage management from different locations, firmware upgrades, reporting, monitoring, diagnostics and performance.
— Availability and resilience, addressing near 100 % service availability and resilience across two data centres.
— Backup enhancement.
— Data Tiering.
— Green agenda.
— Ongoing support costs.
— Provide solutions for commodity and enterprise class storage.
We expect an initial spend of approximately GBP 1 m, with additional investment annually to allow for incremental growth of core systems already housed on the SAN. The initial spend will allow us to replace existing capacity plus allow for a modest amount for growth.
