The University of East Anglia is looking to purchase of an ocean glider with integrated CTD and turbulence sensors for use in coastal and open ocean environments worldwide, including polar environments.
Glider to be able to profile down to 1000 m or greater and able to be programmed to turn around underwater without surfacing (‘W’ shaped profiling). Glider to include an altimeter allowing automated bottom avoidance.
The integrated turbulence sensor system must:
1) Include a minimum of a single microstructure shear probe and a single fast response thermistor.
2) Allow flexibility to use multiple microstructure shear probes or multiple fast response thermistors.
3) Include accelerometers to measure contaminating high-frequency vibrations.
4) Package the electronics entirely within the hydrodynamic body of the glider.
5) Allow two-way communication between the glider and turbulence sensor system so that:
a. The glider and turbulence sensor system can be time-synced;
b. The turbulence sensors can be turned on/off at any depth and separately for ascent and descent;
c. A subsample of microstructure data can be transmitted to along with standard glider communications and data transmission;
6) Allow a minimum of 1-month continuous microstructure sampling without either memory or power limitation.
Glider to use an existing CTD sensor.
Glider to have the flexibility for future integration of additional sensors, possibly including:
Dissolved oxygen.
Chlorophyll fluorescence/optical backscatter.
ADCP.
Echo sounder.
