Description

The Council’s need to refresh desktop hardware provides a challenge to both the resources and capital required to continually improve and an alternative to the current methodology is proposed.

In order to deliver new technology for the business such as Windows 7, Office 2010 and integrate with SharePoint 2010 many of the council’s current equipment will require some investment of resources that could prove to be beyond the current capacity of the Council’s IT Service.

The proposed delivery of new technology by the provision of a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure could resolve the problem of insufficient resources, but also brings to bear a number of other significant benefits, specifically the delivery of application virtualization to operate within the VDI environment. This component is the part that delivers huge benefits in terms of application compatibility and portability and should provide the capability to ensure that existing and legacy applications, even those not certified to use under Windows 7 are provided with an environment within which to continue their operation.
