Description of the contract

Recent drying of parts of the Rivers Lathkill and Bradford in the White Peak area of the Derbyshire Derwent catchment have highlighted the significant impact both the natural geology and mine drainage soughs (man-made drainage tunnels) have on these iconic rivers. Our aim is to gain a better understanding of how rainfall, mine drainage, geology and water abstraction interact in the area as the exact effects of these factors on the Rivers Bradford and Lathkill are currently unclear. In order to make sure we can provide the best evidence, we need to review our data relating to water resources in the area. This will include assessing and reporting on data relating to river and mine drainage (sough) flows, groundwater levels and rainfall. The project will evaluate the detailed hydrogeology of these rivers to enable mitigation measures to be identified to minimise future low / no-flow events.
