Caledonian MacBrayne and CalMac are trading names of CalMac Ferries Limited, which was incorporated in May 2006 (SC302282). CalMac Ferries Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of David MacBrayne Limited, the holding group of companies which is wholly owned by Scottish Ministers.
CalMac Ferries provides lifeline ferry services to the Clyde and Hebridean islands which are safe, reliable and affordable. CalMac operates a high quality service, focusing on customers’ needs and comfort. CalMac is committed to the highest management standards and aims to be acknowledged as the leading ferry company in the UK, providing value for money, supporting the economy, protecting the environment.
CalMac Ferries Limited operates a fleet of 28 vessels, providing lifeline ferry services to the communities off Scotland’s west coast from Isle of Lewis in the north to the Isle of Arran in the south, as illustrated in the attached network map document. CalMac Ferries sails to 24 different destinations operating from 49 ports and slipways some of which are in remote locations.
The current wide area network technology used within Calmac Ferries (CalMac) is based around MPLS wide band architecture, consisting of a number of fixed link circuits at the larger terminals, supplemented by ADSL technology at the smaller port offices. All circuits feed into a BT IP Clear ‘cloud’, which offers the benefit of increased network resilience. For added resilience, fixed link sites have an additional ISDN2 backup data connection to Gourock.

The emphasis for the new contract will be on providing ‘always-on’ connectivity, (24x7x365) whereby ships will be permanently connected to the corporate network. It is proposed to transition to a new Fully Managed Service model by March 2014.
As CalMac operates a fleet of passenger and vehicle ferries in the Clyde and the Western Isles of Scotland which means that long range wireless, GPRS, or Satellite communication will feature heavily in any proposed solution. CalMac also wishes to provide WiFi internet access for its customers and corporate wireless access for its staff, at all Points of Presence (POPs).
