Greater Manchester Public Health Network (GMPHN) is a collaborative organisation that works on behalf of the Greater Manchester Directors of Public Health to ensure that public health has a strong and credible voice with local, regional and national partners.

Work for Health is a new approach developed by GMPHN to increase the numbers of people who remain in or return to employment during periods of both chronic and short term ill health.

Work for Health considers  the way that work can support people with health conditions based on a collation of findings from a social, economic and health evidence base, which  demonstrates that:

·      The decision to stay in or return to work is made at a very early stage in an individual’s diagnosis and rarely changes. It is heavily influenced by what medical professionals say.

·      Almost everyone can work regardless of their medical condition – but messages given by professionals highlight the barriers and risks associated with employment rather than the benefits.

·    Physical and mental health conditions can be better supported using a work rehabilitation model.
