Scottish Borders Council has concerns regarding the increasing number of youth unemployed as well as the lengthening duration of employment. In addition, Scottish Borders Council wishes to create conditions to support business growth, in particular by enabling small companies to grow by investing in fresh talent.

The Council has been successful with a funding application to the Youth Employment Scotland (YES) programme and European Social Fund (ESF) for a Scottish Borders Youth Employment Scotland (YES) Scheme. The YES Scheme will provide grant funding to encourage local businesses to create new jobs for young people. The Scheme provides an opportunity to link supporting those who have been unemployed to develop key skills, experience and confidence along with supporting and enabling business growth. The business structure in the Scottish Borders is dominated by micro businesses and SMEs. This Scheme provides an opportunity to encourage business growth by supporting employers with assistance in the recruitment of additional staff.
