‘Invest In Youth’ is a project aimed at engaging and inspiring the most disengaged young people resident in the Lancashire LEP area. It will target 16-24 year olds who are unemployed or economically inactive with multiple social, emotional and economic barriers. These young people are faced with a seemingly unending and confusing environment of challenges including intergenerational worklessness, poverty, benefit dependency, low skills, lack of employment experience and they often live in communities with few working role models. They lack context and understanding of how they fit into and could benefit from a growing Lancashire economy. Careers advice and guidance, supported by strong employability support is essential in supporting young people to access employment opportunities as they become available, but these young people need more. They need to be inspired, they need their horizons broadened, they need to see above and beyond all the barriers in front of them and begin to see a way out, a way up. We understand that each person will have their own, possibly complex mix of challenges and will need a fully personalised approach to find their way through this journey and ultimately bring them closer to the labour market. The aim of the project is for longer term re-engagement rather than short term outputs.
